It was a difficult time during the height of the pandemic. Winter had arrived and jobs were scarce. I was running out of money and had to find a way to pay rent and buy food. The only job available was picking oranges for $17 a day. I knew I needed to find a way to make more money, so I decided to move out of the state.
I asked my friends Stessi and Emil to help me smuggle my belongings out of the state and they agreed. The next morning, we set off for the border. I had a work permit, so I used it to try and relocate. The border control officer didn’t seem to notice anything suspicious and let us pass.
We stopped in Balranald, took a bus to Cootamundra, and then took a train to Sydney. As we made our way through the crowded train, I couldn’t help but feel nervous. If we were caught, we could face severe consequences, including thousands of dollars in fines. But we had no other choice and continued on, trying to blend in as best as we could.
As we approached the final destination, an announcement came over the loudspeaker instructing all passengers to prepare their documents for inspection. We were nervous but tried to remain calm as we were questioned by the border officer. In the end, he let us pass and we successfully made it to Sydney. We were proud and accomplished, having risked everything to get there and start a new life.
